Whatman No. 4 is a fast-flow qualitative filter paper with 20-25µm particle retention, suited to rapid gravity filtration of coarse precipitates. The high flow rate makes it the preferred choice when speed is more important than fine retention - typical applications include filtering gelatinous hydroxide precipitates, decolourising charcoal from hot solutions, and routine clarification of coarse suspensions in general laboratory work.
