Used as an oxymercuration reagent for Markovnikov-selective hydration of alkenes in organic synthesis, as a mercury ion source in analytical chemistry, and in preparation of mercury reference standards. Mercury compounds are highly toxic; handle with appropriate precautions. AR grade ensures reliable mercury content for analytical applications.
